Code of Conduct
Respect for Library Building, Equipment, Staff, and Patrons
The Alger Public Library will not deny library service to any patron because of religion, creed, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical handicap.
The following are NOT allowed at the Alger Public Library:
Engaging in conduct that disrupts with normal operation of the Library, or disturbs staff or other library visitors, including, but not limited to:
- Harassing behavior
- Obscene or abusive language or gestures
- Unreasonable noise, including talking on a cell phone
- Engaging in sexual conduct or lewd behavior
- Having a knife, gun, or any other weapons; except for Law Enforcement
- Smoking or vaping
- Eating or drinking, except in designated areas
- Using alcohol or illegal drugs
- Sleeping in the Library
- Making unreasonable use of the bathrooms, including laundering clothes or bathing
- Selling any goods or services unless approved by the Board of Trustees. Will need a request form.
- Soliciting or petitioning
- Bringing in animals, unless it is a certified therapeutic or service animal
- Damaging, defacing, or misusing any library materials; changing hardware or software settings on computers
- Engaging in any activity that is in violation of federal, state, local, or other applicable law or library policy
- Unattended Children
- APL is not responsible for children left unattended.
- Safety and Personal Responsibility
- Patrons are responsible for their personal property while on library premises. APL is not liable for lost or stolen items.
Shirts and shoes must be always worn in the library, regardless of age.
Persons who cannot conduct themselves accordingly will be asked to leave the library. Anyone defacing or damaging library property or material will be required to pay for damages or replacement and may be subject to loss of library privileges and/or criminal complaints. Any dangerous or inappropriate behavior will be turned over to the police, or other proper authorities.
The library follows the rules and regulations in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Thus, the Library Board will offer equal opportunity for employment and access to facilities, programs, and activities for handicapped persons.
